Tom, as with many shafts, I am in between your regular and stiff for the black hybrid. My swing is medium in almost every way. Medium speed, tempo, launch. And generally use shafts that are neither too active nor too stiff toward the tip. Would you expect better results with a regular that is tipped a little or a stiff either straight in or maybe soft stepped? I’ve only used 370 hybrid shafts in the past. The weight and profile of your s2s black hybrid is appealing. Any insight appreciated.

Hi Tom, I am looking to extend my EQ1-NX hybrid by 1/2″. Golfworks sells a universal shaft extender that says it will fit 0.540 to 0.590 inside diameter. My hybrid is currently built at 37.5″. Do you know if the diameter of my S2S BLACK hybrid shaft will fit the extender?

Hi Tom, Quick question re: tip trimming: I’ve read here that tip trim is based on final length. I’ve also read your feelings about hybrid length: you advocate hybrids to match the length of the iron they’re replacing, rather than longer (like most in the industry). Am I correct in this assumption: The hybrid #’s on the trim chart correspond to building them to equivalent standard iron length. Ie: The trim for a 5H (1.5″) is intended for a 38″ club 3H at 39″ etc. If I wanted to build a hybrid at 38.5″ long I would use the 4H… Read more »

Tom,

I play the S2S Black hybrid shaft in R and a Black Wood shaft at 40″ in R flex in your 4W. I hit both of them consistently and really like the feel and results. I’m 55 and Play off a 5 hc. I am now wanting to shaft a 3W at 43 or 43.5″ long. Would a R still be correct on the slightly longer Black shaft, or would I want to move to a S in the Black shaft?

I play a VA Composite Drago S shaft in my driver.

Tom, I’m planing to use a White R Hybrid shaft with one of your new 5H EQ-1 heads. I have a question about the trim charts. With the 5H EQ-1 being heavier than your 775hs 5H, how much would you recommend to tip the shaft for a 38-38.5″lg finished Club. I’m experimenting with the gapping between a 6I EQ-1 ( to be built to 37″ with a White R shaft 7I tip trim) iron and the 5 Hybrid so trying for a reasonably close feel,performance,and distance gap. Contemplating moving to graphite in my irons and will be building a test club with the s2s red and s2s black … Wondering what yours/others experience has been using the black hybrid as an iron shaft. The black iron shaft just won’t have enough heft for me. Is there enough PTS to trim for a wedge. TIA

Hey there TOM, how are you? I was hoping to get your feedback on using the Black Hybrid shaft. I am planning on putting it into a 775HS #2 head. I am going as short as possible, to be the next step from my Sterlings, but with my (very) jumbo grips that’ll have me around 39.5-39.75″ to get around a preferable ‘D’ swingweight. With my added weight (27-29g, depending on epoxy), would I be okay with tip trimming a stiff flex 1.5″? My driver swingspeed is around 110-112, if that helps. JAKE You did not say how much your preferred very jumbo grips weigh but if they are up there in the range of 70-80g or more, you probably won’t be able to get a D range swingweight with the 775-2 at 39.5-39.75″. By my calculations, using the 100g weight of the Black hybrid shaft with a normal 232g head weight for the 775-2 at 39.5-39.75″ and estimating for both a 70 and 80 gram grip, with a 9 gram weight in the weight bore and a 9 gram weight in the sole weight bore, with the 70g grip you may… Read more »

THANK YOU for your reply TOM. When I had submitted my question through the form on this page, it didn’t act like other pages I’ve used on your site… so I didn’t know my question made it to you. I’m glad that it reached you! My grips, usually including some build-up wraps, are typically in the 95-100g range. The calculations I use must be off. I entered in 232g (head), 18g (2x weight bores), 9g (tip weight) and added 1g for epoxy/ferrule. I have a question regarding the coiled shim. How does this fit into .370 hybrid heads? And how does this affect or change the flight of the ball? Or is this a seamless transition that won’t have any affect? I have read how the different sizes can hinder results. Any help as always will be appreciated. I am still improving and averaging under 100 now

ERIC There are two ways clubmakers install the coiled shim to be able to install a 0.335 shaft into a 0.370 bore. Some like to install the shim in the hosel first, then install the shaft into the hosel with the shim in place with a slow rotating motion on the shaft as it is inserted. Others like to put the shim on the shaft first, then install the shaft with the shim in the hosel also with a rotating motion. Takes a little practice either way.
