S2S SMOOTH STEEL

STEEL IRON SHAFTS

Features:

  • The S2S Smooth Steel Iron Shafts are designed for better players with above average strength and with stronger than average transition force
  • S2S Smooth Steel bend profile is ideal for golfers with a midway to very late release who also are average to above average in their transition force and tempo. Golfers with an early to midway release and smooth to average transition/tempo, who wish to play steel, should use the S2S Superlite steel iron shafts
  • S2S Smooth Steel iron shafts are available in R and S flexes – 42″ raw length for the R flex and 40″ for the S flex to make it easier to keep the two flex versions from being mixed up due to the stepless design
  • The S2s Steel shaft models feature a smart modern screen print graphic, along with a self-stick plain black decal for flex designation

Hello Tom
Been playing these shafts (stiff) over 8 years in the 560MC and really enjoy them. I’m curious how these compare to to the Nippon NS Pro 950 since I found a used set of Mizuno MP60 for a nice price with the Nippon shafts in them?

Hello Tom
Thank you for the fast and informative reply. I’ve no intention to give up on my current set, it’s staying. From what I gather here the S2S Smooth Steel is no longer available and I’m looking for something similar for the “back-up” set.

Hello! First time here! I’m trying to make good shaft choices as I update my clubs. I built my set in 2004 when my driver clubhead speed was a measured 115 mph. I was characterized as “smooth-fast”. O don’t have an overly aggressive move in transition, nor do I have a very late release. Now, at 64, my swing is shorter but still producing a smooth 101-104 mph/driver, 87-90/5 iron. My driver has a UST Proforce 65 X stiffness. My irons are TT Dynamic Gold Lite X stiffness. I hit it high but not ballooning…a high line drive! My pro… Read more »

Hi Chris, The S2S red shafts are aimed at golfers with an very forceful transition and a later release, but the shaft doesn’t feel too boardy. The Black shaft plays slightly easier than the red in transition and tip. The red being stiffer in the tip should help keep ball flight down. Also have a look at the driver loft you are using, driver loft and angle of attack play a major role in ball flight. It would be interesting to know what driver loft you tested with the Project X smoke shaft compared to the driver loft you use… Read more »

Are these steel iron shafts still being sold on the Diamond golf Wishon golf site? If so, I can not find them?

Dear Mr.Wishon. I just came back from my fitting session and was amazed by the S2S Smooth Steel shafts. But unfortunately I was told, they are still not available. is there any expectation yet? Or will they never come back? On the other hand, why are they still listed on your webpage then? Alternatives have been mention below with “FST Pro stepless”, correct? Kind regards,
Robert

Tom: I understand from Diamond Golf that the smooth steel shafts have been discontinued due to a need to change manufacturers. Too bad as this has been a shaft with good feel/performance (and a great price). From my conversation with customer service the other day, it didn’t appear that there was any timeline on re-release or that a new manufacturer had been selected. Could you provide some suggested alternative shafts (to Smooth Series S flex) in the interim? Diamond Golf mentioned the FST Pro Stepless shafts. Without disassembling my Sterlings, I’m looking to tinker more with the EQ1-NX irons over… Read more »

Tom, I have been looking at using this shaft for a 3i – 9i set in your 575MC head with 3/8″ between clubs starting with the 3 iron at 38.75 inches and using a 52g grip. I calculate the 3 iron swing weight to be C7.7 progressing to D2.7 for 9 iron for an average increase between clubs of .8 of a swing weight point. Is this a reasonable approach with perhaps 4 grams added per head to bring the starting head weight closer to D0. How would this compare to an MOI matched set?

Hi Tom,

Do you also check every steel shaft in production to find a stable plane of bending or the most stable plane of bending and do you position the logo accordingly or draw lines on the butt end?

Best regards
Daniel

Hi Tom,
I am looking to build a new set of irons to play very close to DG X100 with the stepless shafts. I have found conflicting tipping advice to reach this profile. What is your recommendation?
I have a chart showing tipping an extra 1/2 inch being close, but in a previous post you said 2 inches would produce an Xstiff profile.
Thank you!

BEN For the Stepless iron shaft, you would have to add 2″ to the S flex tip trim to make it a full X. Now if you work under the premise that the X100 is a slightly softer version of an X, then you could add 1 3/4″ to the S flex tip trims to get to a slightly softer X with the Stepless. But do be careful of the lengths when you start cutting that much off the tip of the Stepless R&S combination flex shaft as you might run out of butt section depending on your final length… Read more »

Hello Mr. Wishon. I have a question. Would you say your own shafts are better then a dynamic gold?

Hello Tom
I have one lenght irons
I want To change shaft for shaft with the adequate (verified) Frequencie.
Do you sell this?

Tom Wishon

Mr. Malige The work on the new shafts that you would like to have done for your single length iron set must be done by an experienced custom clubmaker so that the frequency matching is done correctly. The VERY BEST clubmaker to do this in France is Andre Thaon at Golf n’ Swing in Le Pecq which is a close suburb to Paris. If you are not close to Paris you can contact Andre and you can ship the clubs to him for the work you wish to have done. His contact information is as follows: Andre Thaon Golf n’… Read more »

Tom, Have you ever considered making a constant-weight shaft? I love this shaft and it’s a great price compared to major shaft companies, but I hate the thought of it playing lighter in the short irons and heavier in the long irons. A constant-weight option would be amazing. Typically, this would mean taper-tip shafts, but it doesn’t have to… I also assume it’s more expensive to do that instead of just having the one shaft manufactured and then tip-timming for stiffness. So what I want is (not sure anyone ever does it this way): 1. Iron-specific shafts so you can… Read more »

KYLE A properly made constant weight shaft would cost too much for a smaller company like ours to try to develop and offer. Separate tooling dies have to be made for each one of the different raw length constant weight shafts regardless of tip diameter and to make that worth doing, you have to have the capability to sell more of the shafts than we could through the clubmaker market we serve. One has to be able to sell hundreds of thousands of shafts to make that kind of commitment worth doing instead of tens of thousands of shafts. It’s… Read more »

Hi Tom
I have been playing true temper dynamic gold s300 for ages (in my Titleist 690CB) and they fit my game well.
is the 115 g S2S Stepless Steel S shaft the best choice to get same characteristics?
I am looking for which shaft to order for a Sterling single length set.
Due to where I life it is not convenient to go to a fitter unfortunately.
Thanks in advance
Best, Sander

SANDER The S2S Stepless is a standard weight tip stiff steel shaft design which makes it similar in bend profile to the Dynamic Gold. For as long as we have offered the Stepless in the line, we have a lot of feedback from players who had a lot of years with the DGold who like the Stepless as well or better in the irons. Since you are not in reasonable proximity to a clubfitter, I might suggest that you take a look at http://www.sterlingirons.com . This clubmaker direct sales fitting site for the Sterling Irons has been around since early… Read more »

Good DAY GENTS!
Currently playing 752tc irons with series 5 shafts s-flex
Looking at an upgrade to my clubs this year, and open to your input.
Swing speed 95-100 but at 71 things are slowing down and my aggressive swing starting to hurt.lol
My handicap is a 12-14

DON I would say to consider one of two things – 1) If you wish to stay with a conventional incremental length set of irons, the 771 irons could be a very nice step for you to take after the 752’s. The 771’s are a high COR face design with variable thickness face so the would deliver a little more distance for each iron number vs the 752’s and the variable thickness face should definitely offer a noticeable improvement in off center hit distance. 2) You could consider the Sterling Irons for their single length design. It really has been… Read more »

Hello Tom,
i was wondering if there is any change to get those shafts in Black version like the KBS C-TAPER because apparently they do have the same specifications.

MAT My apology for being late with a response to your question about the Stepless steel iron shafts. I am sorry but I am not sure exactly what you are asking. If you are asking if the Stepless shafts will be offered in a black finish such as black chrome or a PVD black impregnated finish, I am sorry but no, there is no plan for that. To do that you have to have the shaft maker do that as a separate production order which means planning for minimum order quantities which are typically quite large. No company does a… Read more »

Hi Tom,
How much would you have to tip regular stepless to make it play like the stiff? 2 inches?
Thanks

KYLE
2″ more tip trim per each iron head number will turn the R into the S flex in the Stepless steel shaft.

can these be tipped to fit someone who needs Xstiff or X+stiff?

Tom Wishon

BRANDON
S2S Stepless would require a 2″ additional tip trim on all irons for each head to move it into an X pattern. Can be done because the tip parallel section is long enough, but an extender might have to be used in the butt to reach the player’s desired playing length depending on the hosel bore depth and the length required by the golfer.

Tom, Sorry if this question has been asked and answered already. Thinking about re-shafting my 560MC’s. I did a quick search on the forum’s site but did not find the answer. Also posted a similar question on the forum. The 2014 printed and on-line catalog showed identical bend profiles for the S2S Stepless and the S2S Superlite. This can’t be right. Can it? Also, I went into the customer ordering site for further clarification. But when I clicked on view specs, it linked me to this blog. Can someone please post the profile data for the R-flex on both shafts?… Read more »

Very consistent. Easy to obtain proper frequencies when building a set. Solid feel.

I thought I would never go back to steel shafts in the irons. When TWGT can out with the stepless steel shaft, I thought I had to try it. I have hit a lot of steel shafts and by far this is the smoothest steel shaft I ever hit. Not harsh, feels great.
