Hi Tom, Are Junior clubs( Specifically for a female age 11, 60 inches tall) fitted by club speed or just by their height?
Brian For sure, the junior’s height is a big starting point in fitting because of course, ending up with clubs that are too long is a sure way to hamper the development of the player, and make it tougher to get to a point where they enjoy the game enough to keep going on with it. But there is no question that the weighting of the clubs is also VERY important, chiefly to make sure the clubs are not too heavy because that too will surely get in the way of the junior being able to develop solid fundamentals. So… Read more »
Is there any chance of putting a standard length gap wedge shaft in all my wedgers rather than having a 7irion shaft in my wedgers
Vladimir It sounds like you are asking about whether it is ok to have standard length wedges in a single length iron set in which all the other irons are of 7 iron length. I hope that is what you are asking since this is how I will answer. I would say from my experience that it is better to BEGIN with all the irons and wedges in a single length set to be the same length, same specs. If after playing 7-8 rounds and hitting balls a number of times you find that you just cannot control the distance… Read more »
What is the msrp of the set?
JOSH We do not get involved in what the independent custom clubmakers charge for a retail price for any of our designs. They purchase the heads, shafts from us and they determine their pricing to the golfer based on their overhead, their time spent in the fitting process and other matters that can differ from clubmaker to clubmaker. You would need to contact a clubmaker you were thinking of working with to inquire about services offered and pricing. But in general most of the clubmakers will charge a retail price that is similar to what any of the retailers will… Read more »
My clubmaker recommended the 979 to me – first starting with 6-8-P in order to find out whether these clubs are fine for me. Now I want to add a 55° Wedge (S) and don‘t find it for lefthanders – is there any reason for not offering just AW and SW for lefthanders?? Regards Stephan
Stephan Thank you for taking the time to contact us so we could have the chance to answer your question. Most companies do not create a SW that is an actual part of the iron set design because the vast majority of Americans prefer to buy a separate standalone model SW. The reason we have created a SW that is a part of the iron set is because over half of our business is in Europe. In Europe, a higher percentage of golfers do buy a SW that is a direct design part of the iron set. Hence we have… Read more »
Lie of the 979SS are exactly
60
61
61.5
62

64
64 ..
or is it approximatively ?? ..
Is there any 62.25° or something ?
******
From 62° for the 7-iron to 64° for the 9-iron .. then half a degree from 7to5 .. then again a full degree from the 5-iron to the 4-iron
It seels confusing .. do we have to re-check every lie at reception ?
THIERRY These are just the production lie specifications for the 979 iron heads. Because we are in the business of advising and assisting custom clubmakers with the custom fitting and custom building of our clubhead models we never think of our production specs as being the final specs for any golfer. THe final specs are always determined by the clubmaker based on his testing of the golfer. Then the clubmaker does the final bends to establish the final specs for each golfer they fit. The reason I choose a half degree change from the 5 to the 6 and the… Read more »
Tom,
Besides lacking the hi cor variable thickness face, is the 979ss a higher moi head with a lower vertical COG compared to the 771csi?
JUSTIN
The MOI of the 771 is higher than the MOI of the 979 but the CG of the 979 is lower than the CG of the 771. Also, the 771 has a variable thickness face design which really does more to increase off center hit ball speed than will the higher MOI. Variable thickness faces do more to improve off center hit performance than does the MOI.
TOM
Thanks, Tom. I’m looking for the best forgiveness on thin and/or toe misses. I was assuming lower vertical CG and MOI would probably be my best match. I tend to miss thin more often than the toe, so I was prioritizing CG. Would you still recommend the 771 over the 979 in this case?
JUSTIN
Thin shot wise I would lean toward the 771 from all my memories of the hit testing for both the models. Rarely was it seen that a thin bottom rail shot did not get to the green. Or as one of the guys said after thinning it on the green in a test sesson, “thin to win” !!
TOM
Thanks, Tom. I appreciate all the information and I just want to get as much of an idea of the design of each head. I play 771 irons now and I’ve seen both the 979ss and 565mc. The 565 is an absolute beauty of a head. How does its vertical center of gravity compare to the 979ss? Between the three, I think I like the look of the 979 best behind the ball, especially in longer irons. The 771 starts to get visually uncomfortable for me at about the 5/6 iron. Should that preference overrule everything else?
JUSTIN
The 979 would have a lower CG for the #4, 5, 6 and 7 and then for the 8 to wedges they are really so close to each other in VCG that there is no real difference there. If your visual dislike is from the progressive offset in the 771 making those low loft irons a little bit more offset, the 565 has 2mm for all heads in the set for offset so it is definitely a low, traditional players’ look for the offset.
TOM
Hi Tom,
I recently went through a fitting process and was recommended either the 979ss or the 771csi clubheads. They’re both nearly identical in numbers when fitted with the proper shaft. I am a 10 handicap and left handed so these are the only two models I could use of yours. Do you have any specific reasons as to choose one over the other?
Thank you for your help and contributions to golf.
Michael
MICHAEL First of all let me say I am sorry that I have not been able to tool up anymore of my models in left hand than what we offer. It’s a hard, cold fact of life in this industry that in all the years I have been designing clubheads that never has there been a time when a left hand model had more than 8% of the demand of its right hand version. So that slaps the handcuffs on for which I am very sorry. I am a little surprised that the “numbers” for ball speed and distance with… Read more »
Left handed versions available yet ?
James
Yes for sure. Both the 979 and 771 irons in our iron design line have been available in left hand for quite a while. I can’t do them all in left hand for which I apologize because of the handcuffing matter of demand v. supply but the 979s are for sure available in LH. Thanks so much for your interest,
TOM
Hi Tom
I am owner of a new set of your irons 979ss
I play since 60 days….hp 36 of course
It is right for me?
Thanks marco from Italy
MARCO Thanks very much for taking your time to both own a set made with one of our models and to contact us for information. We are always happy to help !! As a new golfer, you are learning the game and you are working hard to learn the proper swing movements that will make you a better player. We wish you the very best in this adventure as you work hard to get better ! The 979SS is an iron design that is very much a good model for a beginning golfer or a golfer with less experience to… Read more »

Hi Tom here again after one year of golf
My hp now is 18, good improvement I think ,
In any case yout irons work wery well.
I,m using Calloway woods ( used ) with stiff shafts.
When do you think that to be the right time to change my clubset ?
Thanks for your answer
Ciao marco
MARCO I am pleased to hear that your first year of golf has been successful enough that you are enjoying the game. Please understand that it is really not possible for me to offer a recommendation for what clubs you should play with at this time without me knowing a lot more about your game, how you play, your clubhead speed, your accuracy tendencies, what your bad shots look like and what you feel that you do well in the game so far and where you feel you need the most improvement. Any information I might offer from what you… Read more »
Will you be making an AW in your 979ss irons for left handlers in the near future?
I love these irons and I wish I had an AW to complete my set.
TERRY Wish I could give you happy news, but it is not likely that we’ll be making the tooling to produce an AW for the 979SS set of irons. Sadly at times one just has to look at the demand side of a club model to see if the door is open to additions or changes in the model. The 979 sits 5th on the list of iron sales demand for the company so that is the telling fact that prevents thought about additions to the model. Hate to say that, because with clubhead design I wish it were just… Read more »
Tom,
Thanks for your reply. Is there an AW available on any of your irons for a left hander?
TERRY Only in the Sterling single length left hand model is there an actual AW as part of the set. We do have a left hand gap wedge in the PCF Micro Tour wedge family which is a standalone wedge model in our design line. I am sorry about that, this is just one of those distasteful things that I as a designer have to accept in terms of the business side of what I do. With left hand golfers being only 8% of the total market, that affects what I can and cannot do in terms of the set… Read more »
Hi Tom,
I am the happy owner of a 979SS set for 2 years, and I am now 13 Hcp.
I am 44 and pretty strong, do you see any need to change for the 565 or maybe 771?
Xmas is coming!
Thanks
Nicolas
Nicolas Yes, Christmas is coming and if we put a “Saint” in front of your name, you could be one of the jolly old man’s helpers from which he might bestow a set of new irons upon you !! HA ! OK – if you ever are at a point with your iron game in which you want or need more distance without having to lower the loft angles, then that would be a reason to look at the 771’s. Their high COR face most certainly would make them about 3/4 to a full club longer per number than the… Read more »
Ho ho ho, but no, I am not Santa!
Thank you for your answer, I’ll see André from Golf N’Swing in a couple weeks 🙂
Happy holidays!
Looking forward to getting properly fitted by Richard Kempton the club Doc in the UK on your advice.. he has been very helpful with all my questions and it will be terrific fun revamping my ancient unsuitable forged blades with some good inexpensive Wishon cast heads etc. which will suit my game far better.. Cheers
TOM
I am SO PLEASED to hear that you worked with Richard for your fitting needs! He truly is one of the very best clubfitters on the planet, and I kid you not about that. If not THE best, really. Thanks very much for taking the time to let us know !!
TOM
after playing golfsmith products for years I was happy to find out Tom was still in the clubmaking business. Just replace my old pythons with the 979. They are great.
Thanks Tom
Thanks Andy !! Yes, there is life after Golfsmith for old Tom here !! We started our company in 2002, a year after I left GS. Proud to say I have been doing the best work of my life since starting Wishon Golf and should have done it sooner ! Although better late than never is always a good credo !
TOM
please tell me if the 979ss iron heads are as forgiving as the 771 csi iron heads
JACK: In all honesty, the 979SS are not going to be quite at the level of off center hit forgiveness as are the 771CSI irons. The variable thickness face design of the 771’s really does put them into a different class with respect to off center hit forgiveness which the 979SS does not have. So you would notice not only more distance per iron in the 771’s for on center hits because of the high COR face, but off center hit forgiveness would be at a higher level with the 771’s from the variable thickness design of the high COR… Read more »
Dear Tom
Just checking-in to let you know that there is at least one person (myself) has been and still using your 979SS Iron set here at the North Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia).
Wonderful Iron Set!
Jason
Thank you Jason! You know, it really is a thrill for me to have the chance to think about one of my designs doing its thing way over on the other side of the world from where we’re at here in the States !! Thanks so much for your support, and for sharing this with us. We really appreciate that and wish you all the best in this great game,
TOM
“Twin Weight Bores allow for a maximum headweight addition of 15g to satisfy any combination of custom length and shaft weight fitting considerations.”
Hi Tom, Could you speak more about the Twin Weight Bores and how to add the additional grms of weight? Thanks,
Grant
GRANT Sure thing. We are a custom clubmaking engineering company which just means we sell our designs as heads only to custom clubmakers around the world. The clubmakers will custom build our designs into a very wide variety of custom fit specs, including a wide range of different lengths, shaft weights, grip weights and final swingweights. As such they need to have a way to add weight to the clubhead to allow them to achieve the final swingweight desired for each golfer, based on what length, shaft weight, grip weight they fit the golfer with. So all of our clubhead… Read more »
Tom, I went ahead and purchased the 979SS irons 5-SW. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for the 560MC’s as most of my rounds are more in the low 80’s. All I can say is WOW! I built them on a lightweight steel shaft, MOI matched and the sound (Click!) they produce when struck cleanly was noticeable to everyone I played with. I threw them in my bag, through cation to the wind, hit thirty balls on the range and hit the course. I was in at 38 on the turn! Although my back nine was quite as good… Read more »
CURT Many thanks for taking the time to stop in and offer your comments. We appreciate that very much and we’re so pleased to hear that your business is doing well and that you are impressed with what we’re doing in our work to offer clubmakers a truly quality line of components to support your clubfitting business. If you like the 979’s, then I would recommend you get a demo iron in the 771CSI design for game improvement players or a 560MC for the better player who needs decent off center hit performance to go along with a nice, traditional… Read more »
Tom, Although I have been building clubs for many years, and have played quite a few sets from Golfsmith, I have been going back to a set I rebuilt for myself many years ago and I can’t seem to get away from them. It’s a copper set made by Nevada bobs back in the very early 90’s called Primma III’s. They are wonderful irons to hit and I want to try these 979ss’s but wondering if it’s worth it. I shoot anywhere from 76-86 on a short (less than 6000 yds) course. I can (half of the time) and like… Read more »
curt I am sorry I am not familiar with the Prima II irons you have so I am not able to comment on what they were like in terms of forgiveness vs other models. I can tell you for players who play as you do, to be good enough to break 80 but still have those rounds in the 80s, I would really recommend you take a look at the 560MC forged cavity back irons. They’re everything a forged carbon steel traditional design is for feel and low offset and what 70s shooters can like, but the off center hit… Read more »
These irons are the best ive ever used. Very easy forgiving and boy when you hit the middle you will feel you chose the wrong club. ie, I hit a 9 and think I chose an 8 ! they look beautiful too trying to keep them like new…..
GARY
Very pleased to hear that you like the new irons!!! Thanks so much and may they always bring you enjoyment in this great game!
TOM
I just had mine retooled by coles custom clubs… Great great set now…So easy to to swing…I feel like ernie els…
The nippon shafts were a perfection fit… I am all wishon now
Tom are these clubs heads ok for players with higher swing speeds?
George
If you are referring to the new 771CSI irons, they are designed to withstand normal repeated use for golfers with clubhead speed up to 95mph with a 5 iron. That’s pretty high so I should think unless you hit your normal 5 iron over 210, the 771’s will work fine for you.
Thanks much!
TOM
Tom,
Are theses 979 heads available in Left hand
Your spec sheet says only right hand
The page where you order says you can buy the left version
I’m confused.
Len
Yes, the 979SS irons are available in LEFT HAND. Sorry for any confusion about that.
TOM
The Wishon 979SS iron heads are an excellent choice to precisely custom fit all levels of golfers. A very ascetically pleasing design, as well as easy to hit, very forgiving on mishits, excellent for the better ball strickers as well.
Great feel & performance. Possibly the finest cast head on the market.
Bought a set of these (and had them custom fit) when I took lessons at Leatherman. Best irons I have ever owned!! I would definitely buy Wishon again when/if I ever wear these ones out.
Very solid performing head. If you don’t want to spend the money on a forged head like the 560MC, this is the head to go with.
