HYBRIDS
The EQ1-NX Hybrids represent the most unique and versatile hybrid design ever created through a greatly expanded internal weight addition capability to allow custom assembly to match single length irons or to be played at conventional hybrid length.
Features:
-
-
Each EQ-1-NX hybrid head is produced with the ability to add up to a maximum of 30g to achieve normal swingweights at 8-iron single length to match the EQ1-NX single length irons
-
Natural head weight specification of each EQ1-NX hybrid head also allows assembly to conventional hybrid lengths of #4(38”-39”), #5(37.5”-38.5”), #6(37”-38”). Any length in between 8-iron and conventional hybrid lengths is also capable for an even wider range of fitting options
-
High strength steel, thin variable thickness face, high COR design. 0.335” bore to accept any S2S Hybrid shaft. Though the EQ1-NX hybrid heads can be reamed to accept any 0.370” iron shaft, we recommend using an appropriate S2S graphite hybrid shaft when matching the EQ1-NX hybrids to the EQ1-NX irons in a full single length set makeup
-
Available in #4(20*), #5(24*), #6(28*) in RH, and #4, #5 in LH – to match the lofts and loft gaps of the EQ1-NX irons
-
The four different weight bores allow for maintaining the best CG position low and center located, as well as to be able to increase the trajectory with the new twin rear sole weight bores
-
Each EQ1-NX Hybrid is shipped with 2 x 6g and 2 x 9g weights included to make it more economical when building to match the EQ1 single length irons
-
Spec lie angle for each EQ1-NX hybrid is 63° to match the EQ1-NX single length irons. EQ1-NX Hybrids are capable of being bent up to 3° to allow proper lie fitting when assembled to conventional hybrid lengths

Hey Tom, I’m looking to add some hybrids and woods to my EQ1-NX iron set. Would it make sense to play a 4H and 7W? Or would they overlap too much?
Would this gapping make sense (roughly speaking), or should I opt for either a 4H or 7W instead of bagging both?:
Woods (41″): 4W, 7W
Hybrids/Irons (36.5″): 4H, 5H, 6i-SW
Thanks!
BRIAN That depends on the loft of the 4h and 7w. Most all the 7ws, at least in my designs, are 21*. And I have tended to do my 4hs at 24*. So a difference of 3* should be sufficient to create two distinctly different carry distances, of course also depending on the lengths you would play these at. I do that in my set makeup. I go from the EQ 6 iron at 28* to my old 915FH hybrid at 24.5* and then I have an EQ 7w at 20.5 that I found in the bin so I could… Read more »
Dear Tom, My first time ever in a trackman trying to work out what shafts suit my swing revealed I swing a conventional 7iron consistently between 94 and 97 mph. My driver speed is consistently 110. I’m purchasing the EQ1-NX irons and am wondering how I would weight the 4 hybrid to match into the single length set. I suit 1″ longer clubs and standard lie.
Kent Good for you that you are up there in clubhead speed, that’s pretty impressive. If you are asking about our iron shafts, with that speed, if you also have a late release coming into the ball, and you are open to considering graphite, you might think about trying the S2S Red iron shafts. It is a heavier weight shaft at 105-110g and it is a very interesting stiff butt, soft center, very stiff tip design that players with high speeds AND a late release have liked a lot. Just a thought when I saw your Trackman numbers. As far… Read more »
Dear Tom, The trackman identified my best iron shaft to match my swing as a Project X LS 6.0. These are only available in 0.355 taper tip. Can these be fit to the EQ1-NX irons or would you be able recommend something very similar. The LS 6.0 has a very stiff but section.
Kent If you have been through testing to know that the Proj X LS 6.0 shafts are the best for you, then by all means you should go with that. I was just making a best estimate guess based on what little you had shared with me about your characteristics when I spoke about the S2S Red graphite iron shafts. Any experienced clubmaker can use either shims or by mixing a fair bit of very fine sand with the epoxy with which to install the shafts. Of the two methods, the shims would typically be better because if you get… Read more »
I knew the answer would be simple. Thank you Tom for being such a great bloke and having the patience to answer our annoying questions. I can’t wait to show off my new Wishon clubs.
Kent
Pshaw, the questions are never annoying!!! Never.

Hey Tom. I am loving the EQ1-NX 4 and 5 hybrids I put in the bag recently. They have really made it a no-brainer to drop the long irons. My question is in regards to bounce on the hybrids. I play 565MC irons and the lofts aren’t aligned with the lofts on the EQ1-NX line. I originally had the EQ1 4H and 5H in the bag, along with the 565 MC 5-iron, as the EQ1 5H loft is 24* while the 565 MC 5-iron is 26*. The 5H was built 3/8” longer so the gapping worked. I’d like to have… Read more »
DJ First of all, the matter of bending loft on hybrids (or woods) is very much up for debate and requires a good bit of knowledge about the relationship of bending the hosel to the position of the sole on the head in the address position. Bear with me here because this takes some explanation in the form of background with irons. In an iron, when you bend the hosel in a direction either toward or away from the target, the bend changes loft for one reason only – because iron soles are very narrow compared to hybrids/woods, AND the… Read more »
Thanks for the information Tom. I enjoy hitting the hybrids so much, I am seriously considering going EQ1-NX irons as well. Even if I don’t, the EQ1-NX 6 hybrid will definitely be in the bag soon.
DJ
FYI, I switched from my EQ1 6-iron to the EQ@1 6 hybrid this year because over lots of shots, the 6 hybrid is just more consistent for me for getting the ball well up to fly from most lie conditions. I can still break 80 but thanks to Father Time, my 6 iron clubhead speed is about 75 so there are times when I just don’t hit the 6 iron as solid or clean while the misses with the hybrid are more “gentle” !! I just have to get used to another head cover in the bag! HA!
TOM
This answer was very very helpful to me. Thank you so much. I’m having a full set of single length built and now I understand. Thank you. I won’t be making a large mistake now.
Hi Tom, I currently have the 4 hybrid, then 5i – SW. I love them, btw, my first single length set, have had them about a month and already seeing dividends. I have them 2” above standard, I believe (around a typical 5 iron length), with project x flighted rifle steel shafts. I came here to see if there was a 3 hybrid I could add to the set but I see it’s not an option. Are there any plans to add a 3 hybrid? Or is the loft an issue with that? If no 3 hybrid what would you… Read more »
Shawn Thanks very much for taking the time to stop by and let us know that you are doing well with the EQ irons and 4 hybrid. That’s great to hear! I have to be right up front honest and tell you that there won’t be a 3 hybrid in the EQ1 set offerings. In any single length set, some of the low loft irons are always shorter in length than they are in a conventional incremental length set. The shorter length causes less clubhead speed than what would happen with the same heads in a conventional lengths set. And… Read more »
Thanks for the reply, Tom. I assumed that was the answer, though I didn’t realize it was that rare to get that distance/launch out of the 5 iron. I do have a decently high swing speed, but I guess I get a nice advantage with the longer length. One question with your suggestion, would that 4WOOD head work with the same type of swing as the irons, with a steeper attack? Or does it need more of a typical fairway wood swing with a shallower plane? If it works with the steeper attack I’ll talk to my fitter about what… Read more »
Shawn You do see tour players these days take a little divot with their fairway woods so if you chose to use the EQ1 4w head to make an equivalent of a 3 hybrid to match your irons’ length, you would just play the 38.5″ 4w club at the same ball position with the same swing and everything that you use for the other irons. The leading edge of the EQ1 fwy wood heads is nicely radiused around from sole to bottom of face so it won’t promote digging too much into the ground if you hit down a little… Read more »
Tom I currently have the 4,5,and 6 single length hybrids at 36-1/2″, happy with the 5 and 6 but would like more trajectory in the 4 current shaft is the hybrid black. ? would going to the white shaft help, head currently has 27 grams of added weight already in it. Would going to 37″ help?
SCOTT Typically, even with the hybrids, when you see the #4 generate a lower shot height than the 5 or 6, it means your clubhead speed is not quite as high as it needs to be to enable the 20* loft of the #4 to achieve enough height with spin to get the ball up higher. A change to a softer tip section or even softer overall stiffness can help a little but usually only for players with a very late to pretty late release of the wrist cock angle coming into the ball. But this is usually pretty slight,… Read more »
Tom thanks for info I will get a 4 and 7 wood EQ1-NX as I like the hybrids I was thinking 39″ for 7 wood and 40″ for the 4 wood and bend 3* flat for my stature and flat swing. ? what shaft, the White fits me for tempo and strength the Green for release. The stiffer tip on white might fight me for what I need. What is the tip flex in the Green. I guess for my short swing and average + tempo/strength and early release a stiff butt section and soft tip is what I need?
Scott 39″ is a little on the short end for the 7w but with the 4 weight bores and 30g total weight addition capability of the weight bores, you should be able to hit a low D range swingweight for the 7w at 39″. I can’t tell you for sure if 3* flat is right for the lie because I can’t see your swing and don’t know anything else about your set up or swing and body characteristics but if you feel more flat is better, then the heads can be bent flatter. It would be best to ask Diamond… Read more »
Tom. I have 4 hybrid. Want to replace shaft. Should I use same shaft as irons or do I need a unique hybrid shaft ?
Thx
PAT It should be a hybrid specific shaft as most of the iron shafts would play too stiff in a hybrid. Also there is the matter of what is the bore diameter of the hosel of the hybrid. Iron shaft tips are either 0.355″ tapered or 0.370″ parallel with the 0.370 being by far the most predominant iron bore diameter. Hybrids can be either 0.370 parallel or 0.335 parallel, but in both cases are almost always with a hybrid specific shaft diameter. So the first thing you need to do is to ID whether the bore on the hybrid you… Read more »
Thx Tom. What is the bore diameter on the EQ-NX1 hybrid ? That is the club I am reshafting.
PAT
Sorry I did not clarify that, but the bore diam on the EQ1 hybrids is 0.335 parallel.
TOM
Does the EQ-1 hybrids and fairway woods come with extra weights to interchange for each head?
ROB The hosel bore and sole bore weights are not for moving around to try to change shot shape, like in the case of weight screws on other heads. The weights we make to go with the weight bores on our heads are used only for final swingweighting during the custom assembly of any of our models by clubmakers. We make these in increments of 2g, 4g, 6g and 9g for final swingweighting. Such weight amounts could never act to change the shot shape. It takes the movement of a lot more than that to have any effect on shot… Read more »
I have a Stirling iron set for a few years. Know the problems with the 4 iron well. Can this set be combined with the EQ1-NX hybrid and fairway woods? With the same length as the irons?
Greetings Michael
Michael Yes, the Sterling #4 iron can be incorporated with the #5 to wedges set makeup of the EQ1-NX irons. Both the Sterling and the EQ are designed to cater to a std 8 iron length since the head weight of the EQ’s is 275g and the headweight of the Sterlings is 274g. I just kicked the head weight up 1g in the EQ’s to offer a tiny bit more help in achieving a specific swingweight when lighter shafts or heavier grips are used. The only real difference that may or may not bother you is that the Sterling 4… Read more »
Hi Tom, I’ve just received my order of hybrids 4,5,6 with S2S white R flex. I am planning to build them to 39”2/8 #4, 38”7/8 #5, 38”4/8 #6. I would like to seek your advice what tip trim should I do for each shaft and what head weight gaps between the heads to achieve 0.5 swing weight point incremental from club to club? Thank you!
Btw, I am impressed with the tight tolerance of the components!
Thangx Because you are building the hybrids to a length that is longer than our std full hybrid length, I would recommend a little more tip trim than what is the norm for std length hybrids. Thus you can tip 2″ for the #4, 2.5″ for the #5 and 3″ for the #6, then cut to the lengths you wish for each hybrid from the butt. As far as the swingweights go, it is impossible to accurately tell you exactly how much weight to add to get to your desired swingweight for each club because there are just too many… Read more »
Hi Tom.
Thank you so much for the quick replies.
A final question about the hybrids. My irons 5i-SW have Dynamic Gold S300 shafts in them. Do you recommend the S2S graphite for my potential 4H acquisition? Would this pair well with my other shafts?
Thanks again.
Brian
BRian If you do in fact have the proper clubhead speed to be able to hit the #4 hybrid at a length that is the same as the other single length irons, then you would have the option to ream out the hybrid hosel to use the same shaft in that hybrid that you use in the irons so everything is identical. ON the other hand, I did design the EQ hybrids to accept any of our 0.335 tip S2S graphite hybrid shafts as an option. This is probably better unless you have a clubhead speed of more than 80mph… Read more »
Related to my question below, or should I just add a 4H instead of a 5H if I already have a 5i. Cheers.
BRIAN Here again the answer lies in what your clubhead speed is. We did not create a 4 iron because the 4 iron would have had to be 20* loft. 20* loft at a shorter single length IN AN IRON is going to require at least an 85+ mph clubhead speed with your 8 iron to achieve the proper ball speed and spin and shot height to be able to have the 4 iron carry the ball a full club more than the 5 iron. The lower and more rear located CG of the 4 HYBRID helps to overcome this… Read more »
Hi Tom,
For a medium-high club head speed player, would having both a 5H and 5i make sense? I’m a little newer to the game so still learning the ins and outs of building out a set. Distance wise what would one expect to see from the EQ1 5H vs the EQ1 5i. Do both have a spot in a set of clubs?
Thanks,
Brian
BRIAN The intent of the EQ1 hybrids is to offer a club of the same loft and same length that the golfer can hit more easily to achieve proper shot height to be able to achieve proper distance for those specific low lofts. There is a clubhead speed for each of the lower lofts that has to be achieved before those lofts can achieve the proper launch angle and shot height to bring about proper carry distance and an adequate distance gap from the next club in order. To be able to hit the EQ1 #5 iron properly with its… Read more »
Hi,I have 2 part question: I have serious interest in the EQ1-NX set build. Currently, im in Pinhawk Vertex’s and they are just ok. I was wondering if these 4, 5, 6 hybrids can be built with the same .370 shafts as the 6i-LW without issue? Has there ever been any head to head carry yard tests between the hybrids and their matching irons before? Specifically using a 5h vs the same 5i and the same with a 6h vs 6i? I’m very worried about gapping of the hybrids carry yards would be dramatically different after the 7i carry yard,… Read more »
ROB A competent clubmaker can ream out the 0.335 bore of the EQ1 hybrids to allow them to accept a 0.370 parallel tip iron shaft. That can be done for sure. Yes, in the development of the hybrids, we did look at that and the answer is that it is different for different golfer swing types. Pretty much all the time as clubhead speed increases AND as the release happens later in the downswing, the hybrid will have a tendency to fly a little farther than the iron of the same loft. But as swing speed drops down, and or… Read more »
Tom, I just read this post and realized that I had experimented with the difference between single length iron and hybrids over the last few months to Rob’s question. I got my set of single length irons in late October including two single length hybrids a 5 & 6. All made to 37″ and a swing weight of D2. I intentionally ordered a 6 hybrid and a 6 iron because I wanted to understand the club design better. It has been worth it to me. Right now, I’d say the two 6 clubs are about the same in distance. I… Read more »
Rob, if you want to experiment, I have an extra .370 bored EQ1NX 4h that I am selling. It currently has a Steelfiber i95 regular shaft in it, but i have a few other options lying around the shop.
How much? I might be interested… The rest of my shafts are stiff flex though.
Happy New Year! I have a question concerning trimming the blue hybrid shaft in the EQ1-NX hybrid clubs. If I decided to make the 5 and 6 hybrid the same length as the irons (37″), how much should I trim the hybrid shaft? The chart shows 2″ for 6 hybrid but that would be for a regular length 6. Thanks
George
There is a small sheet of paper that comes with each EQ1 clubhead that explains all the assembly instructions. On that sheet you would see that the tip trim for the hybrids when made to 36 to 37″ single length is 2.5″ for each hybrid head, when using any of the Wishon hybrid graphite shafts.
TOM
Greetings! Could you please tell me if the single length hybrids will be available in left handed?
Raymond The EQ1 irons, woods and hybrids will all be available in left hand in 2022. I have been a little bit out of the loop on things due to having missed a bunch of time for a surgery so I will have to dbl check with Diamond to learn what the actual shipping and delivery schedule is for the left hand models. Hi Joseph,
Tom is currently away so I have handed this to our master clubmaker, Doug Holmes:
Generally single length hybrids are shorter than standard hybrids to help with consistency, so if you have a gap between your hybrid 5 and 7-wood, you could very well add the 4 hybrid to bridge the gap, rather than make his existing hybrids longer.
Hope this helps,
Ash
Thank Ash for your comment.
Will the hybrid 4 as easy to play as the 5?
Hi Joseph,
I have responded to you via email.
Best regards,
Ash
Tom I have the EQ! single length irons and love them but can’t seem to hit the 5 iron well. Goes about the same distance as the 6 iron. I just bought a new EQ 5 hybrid with 8 iron length like rest of my irons. I can’t hit it. When I do it goes about as far as my 6 if I am lucky. I hit my 6 iron 165 yards. Is my swing speed not fast enough for the hybrid at 8 iron shaft length. Should I put in a regular size shaft to get me to a… Read more »
ERIC Bet the farm the reason you hit the 5 and 6 irons the same distance is because your clubhead speed with the single length irons is not above 76-77-78 mph, OR, you happen to be more steep coming down into the ball with the irons. During the original testing of my first single length set designed for 7 or 8 iron length, we learned a TON. One very key thing was the relationship of clubhead speed to iron head loft with regard to being able to generate enough ball speed, backspin and shot height to be able to ensure… Read more »
Thanks Tom. That explains the 5 iron distance but I did buy the new single length 5 hybrid. I can’t hit that as far as I should a 5 iron. Is my clubhead speed not fast enough for the 5 hybrid either or am I just not hitting it well. Should I try a regular length shaft in the new 5 hybrid?
Hi Eric, Tom is currently away so I have handed this over to our master clubmaker, Doug Holmes: The EQI 5 hybrid was designed to help golfers who can’t fly the 5 iron due to a lower swing speed. So it may be worth spending a little more time with the hybrid before making any changes. Extending the hybrid should help with distance as long as you can still hit out of the centre of the clubhead, also keep in mind that if you do extend the hybrid, the lie angle may need adjusting and also the swing weight will… Read more »
When tipping for hybrid single length with 4,5 and 6 to 37”, what am I tipping the hybrid shafts too?
Thank you
Matt
For single length hybrids at 36-37″, the tip trim for all the 0.335 hybrid shafts is 2.5″. If you are using a 0.370 iron shaft, you would tip it the same as you did for all the other single length irons that are going to be the same length as the single length hybrid.

Hi Tom,
Bill Owen built me a set of EQ1-NX, 5-GW, 4 and 7 wood. After about a month I’ve become much more consistent with iron play, and love the 4 and 7 wood! I hit the 7 wood consistently about 190, and the 5 iron consistently about 170. Would a 4 hybrid slot in nicely between the 7 wood and 5 iron, even though the lofts of the 4H and 7W are so similar?
Matthew Great to hear that! Your report on your experience is definitely “music to my ears” because Bill is one of the best at nailing down the right fitting specs for players. It’s logical to assume the 4 hybrid should be right there in between the 7w and 5i because it is -4* lower in loft than the 5i but probably would be at least 3.5″ to 4″ shorter than the 7w. That’s the element that would make the 4h with the same or slightly lower loft than the 7w end up hitting it shorter than the 7w. If at… Read more »

Andrew That’s Diamond Golf’s decision to make in terms of giving out free sets to be evaluated since I am semi retired, consulting as the product development guy for the Wishon Golf product line now. I’m not the “big cheese” anymore!! HA! So giving away lots of sets to get these self proclaimed ersatz experts to say nice things is not my domain anymore! Davis Based on what you say about your distance with the 7 iron, I would recommend that you use the #4 and 7 woods in your single length EQ1 woods. Also the 7 wood will be a very good wood for you with its 21* degrees when made to a single length that your fitter determines is best for you and your skill level. VERY GOOD NEWS to hear that the single length… Read more »

DAN Many thanks for taking the time to stop by and get some more information. It sounds like over time you have gotten to know your limitations with clubs in terms of the length and how you feel that affects your balance. Tom, unfortunately the one Wishon fitter in my area is not working with your shafts. He has fit me with a True Temper Dynamic Gold 105 (tapered .355) for my irons (6 – SW) at +1″.
My 7 Iron swing speed is 78-79 with this shaft using your clubhead. He doesn’t have any of the 2 Hybrids heads, so we need to order. But would you recommend my 4 and 5 EQ1 Hybrids to use the same 105 shaft or should I go the graphite route for the Hybrids?
PETE It is fully acceptable to use the same shaft in the EQ1 hybrids that is used in the irons, provided the hybrids are being made to the same length as the irons to be a perfect match in every spec/manner to the irons. If this is done, the hosel bore of the hybrids will have to be reamed larger to accept the tip diameter of the iron shaft. This is not a big deal for an experienced clubmaker. The reason I made the bore of the hybrids to be 0.335″ is because the hybrids are designed to be optionally… Read more »
Tom, I’ve been devouring the comments on single length irons and hybrids for several months as I’ve begun working with Ed Ellis, my local Wishon fitter. Reading the discussion from Steven posted a month ago I’ve become confused. I hadn’t realized that single length hybrid shaft lengths should be similar to single length irons. I’d anticipated my new single length hybrids to be roughly 40″ which is what my current hybrids use. Have I been wrong in this? My intent was to have three shaft lengths in my bag. Steve Many thanks for not just your interest but your detail so I could have a much better chance to know where you are coming from and how best to address your questions and thoughts for what you would like to do. First off, in making the hybrids so they could be versatile and adopt any length between the same length as the single length irons and WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE NORMAL HYBRID LENGTHS, the key here is to understand that I do not consider any hybrid of 40″ to be normal hybrid length. 40″ is right around where… Read more »

The plan is to replace all of my wedges, irons and hybrids first then move on toward fairway woods then driver. Today’s range session was a positive start. My swing speeds were as follows: current driver (45″ shaft) 85-86 mph, current hybrid with 40″ shaft was 80-81, 5 and 7 irons with standard shaft lengths were 75-77 mph. Ed has EQ1 club heads to… Read more »
Steve Nice to hear you found out a little more about the relationship of club length and club loft to distance. While length is important for clubhead speed, loft is by far the primary determinant of distance. But up to a point, meaning if you go way, way short, you can drop enough clubhead speed from that to cause more distance loss. So there is a fine line in there to a certain extent when it comes to going shorter for more control without losing too much distance. But there is as you found out, a definite point of being… Read more »
