730CL SET
730CL Driver & Fairway Woods
- Designed with a thinner face expressly for golfers with a swing speed of 80mph or lower to increase ball velocity. Golfers with a swing speed of 90mph or higher are NOT to use this driver.
- The 730CL driver is designed with a High Launch loft of 16° to match correctly with swing speeds lower than 80mph to generate the proper launch angle for maximizing distance.
- The 730CL Long and High Fairway woods are 20° and 26° loft respectively, and are perfect lofts for a golfer with a sub-80mph swing speed to use to get the ball up easily off the fairway and generate proper distance in between the two woods.
730CL Hybrid Irons
- 730CL hybrids are designed with 6° loft increments because golfers with a sub-80mph wood swing speed do not achieve a useable distance difference between clubs made with less of a loft difference.
- Sub-80mph golfers who sweep the ball off the ground or who have difficulty hitting the ball high enough with conventional irons should opt for the all hybrid irons in the 730CL set
730CL PW & DW Wedges
- A perfect match and complement to the 730CL set for the <80mph swing speed player are the PW (48°) and DW (54°).
- DW is a Dual Wedge, designed with the right balance of bounce sole angle for use in the sand or in tall grass around the greens.
- 730CL wedges are designed with a taller heel profile and more level topline slope angle, to better “frame” the ball on all shots. From the sand, the higher heel profile of the DW does help push more sand out behind the ball to assist the slower swinger in getting the ball out of the sand more consistently.
- Both PW and DW are designed with a 0.370″ bore to accept the matching 730CL wedge shafts.

Hi Tom, why are the lie of the 8/9 hybrid lower than it would usually be for same length irons, and can we tweak them ?
Andre
ANDRE The lie angles of the 730CL hybrid irons have always been 1* flat compared to normal iron lies. The reason is because I knew this model would be played more by women than men and with women being shorter than men, I felt that the standard lie should be 1 flat. This is a very old model (that hopefully will be replaced with a brand new version before too much longer!!) and the heads are cast from 17-4 stainless which was the norm for pretty much all wood and hybrid models back then, so it will not be easy… Read more »
It stilils a great set !
ANDRE
Thanks Andre for your kind comment!! I too have felt that the 730 really has been a good fit for women and for the men with slower swing speeds who have the ability to see it as a logical improvement and not strictly as a women’s model. I do look forward to having the chance to perhaps do a new version of it before I get to the point I am too old to do this work anymore!! HA!
TOM
HI, is the “your fit custom fit questionnaire” still available? thanks
GARTH No, that program/service does not exist anymore, I am sorry to say. I have been working on an entirely new and far more extensive approach to online fitting programs that I have no idea when it may be done to launch and reveal. I hate to say it but major projects like this were much easier when I wasn’t as old as I am now!!! HA! There’s still some gas in the tank but the engine doesn’t run as fast these days as it used to! Since you know of the former Your Fit program and you asked about… Read more »
Thanks Tom, to those who want to learn everything about custom clubfitting, I highly recommend buying Tom’s textbook “Common Sense Clubfitting” . Its very well written and easy to understand and provides an honest assessment of how golf clubs work – a rare find indeed. Not sure, but you may be able to buy at Diamond Golf UK. https://wishongolf.com/common-sense-clubfitting/ On page 382, you mention how a wedge sole design should be reasonably well fit to the golfer’s swing and the design/condition of the golf course. My dilemma is how to fit a golfer with a steep Angle of Attack swing… Read more »
GARTH Thanks very much for your kind words about the CSC book. I still have fond memories of when I got stoked to write it. 80% of the writing of that book took place between 3AM and 9AM, most days of the week, and then I went to work! It just so happened that I felt more able to keep thoughts in order to keep going on the book that way! Doubt I could ever attempt something like that again! Here’s a fact of life about sole design on wedges, namely on bounce. There is no bounce sole design that… Read more »
Hi Tom,
I have to tell you I’m so relieved to see you were able to keep the 730CL in your current product line. For some reason I was under the impression they were scheduled to be discontinued.
I have built a few 730 CL sets for clients and they fill a unique need for custom fitting requirements that can’t be found anywhere else in the golf industry.
Hope everything is going well for you and family.
Best regards,

BILL It is always great to hear from you and better to hear that you are continuing to help golfers with the 730CL slow swing speed set. For sure, I am forever convinced that a set like the 730 is absolutely vital to keep in the line because it has proven over and over to help people with average to below average clubhead speed. One of these days it may undergo a face lift because the current 730CL is getting a little long in the tooth cosmetically speaking, but rest assured that a version of it will remain in the… Read more »
Are there recommended final build lengths for each club?
Steve The 730CL set can be fit and built for men or women. Since everything we do is for custom fitting, there is a range for the lengths for each club for men and women. Driver – Men: 43-44; Women: 42-43″; Long Fwy – Men: 41.5-42.5″; Women: 40.5-41.5″; High Fwy – Men: 40-41; Women: 39.5-40; #5 Hybrid – Men: 37.5-38; Women: 36.5-37; #6/7 Hybrid – Men: 36.5-37; Women: 35.5-36; #8/9 Hybrid – Men: 35.5-36; Women: 34.5-35; PW – Men: 35-35.5; Women: 34-34.5; Dual Wedge – Men: 34.5-35; Women: 33.5-34. These are of course, basic ranges in length. In the world… Read more »
Thanks Tom. I’ve got a partial set headed my way. I’ll probably dry fit to a D0 swingweight (my preference) and then assemble. Your answer above gives me a good start!
Hi, i’ve just pick up a A 6/7 and 8/9 730CL conventional irons, what is the hosel size on these? is .370 like the wedges or .335 like the hybrid irons
thanks
Grant
The #5, 6/7 and 8/9 hybrid body irons are 0.335 parallel bore. They accept either the S2S Ruby Lite hybrid shafts or any of the other 0.335 tip diameter hybrid shafts in our S2S custom shaft design line.
TOM
Hi Tom,
Since these are not available in LH is there another option you would recommend?
Thanks
Dennis Ouch, that’s too bad that we’re not large enough and the 730CL has not been so widely used that we could justify the tooling and inventory costs to expand the 730CL into left hand. I hate having to say that kind of apology because in all honesty I am not aware of any other options out there that could be remotely similar to the set makeup design of the 730s. With a 16* loft driver, two fwy woods at 20/26* loft, then three hybrid irons at 30/36/42 loft, finished off by two wedges, I have never seen any other… Read more »
Where should I position ball in stance with 730CL hybrids with 30 / 36 / 42 degree lofts?
thx
Danny Ball position with any golf club is determined chiefly by its length. In general, as club length gets shorter through the set, the ball position moves progressively back in the stance from left heel to center. Since the 730CL hybrids are intended to be replacements for irons, think of the 30* hybrid as a 5 iron, the 36* as a 7 iron and the 42* as a 9 iron. Hence you would play the 730 30* hybrid in the same position you have played a 5 iron in past sets, the 36* hybrid in the same ball position as… Read more »
Hi Tom As I age 80 seems as though I could use a new driver I have THI 917 fitted 2015 s2s white in D2.5 swing speed hiver @80. after reading about the 730 it sounds as though would be well suited for it. If you have a reccomendation for which of you drivers would be best I would be welcome it. Recently got titleist T400 irons and love them.Don

DON
The 730CL driver only is made with 16* loft, which is good for players with a driver clubhead speed of under 80mph. Keep in mind that the 919THI is available in a 13 and 15.5 deg loft so if you need the same loft as the 730CL, that can be had by asking for the 919 – 15.5 driver through our Hand select service, to be hand selected for 16 loft. That way you keep the larger size, higher MOI and more forgiving face of the 919 while having the right loft for your needs.

Tom Hope all is well with you. I have a customer with a special needs child and he wants me to build a se for him. The boy hits the ball pretty well with good tempo but can only generate about 65 mph SS with his current driver. I want to fit him in the 730CL set. He hit the demo driver well as well as the long fairway demo I have. I have some questions regarding building his set. I noticed the only 6/7 and 8/9 clubs are hybrids where before there were comparable iron heads. He hits his… Read more »
HI John Good to hear from you and I hope all is well with you. Good for you that you are helping this young man pursue an interest in the game!! Yes, a long time ago when the 730CL model was pretty new, we did have the option for actual irons to go with the all hybrid irons. But as the years went on, no one bought the irons. Over 80% of the demand was for the all hybrid irons version of the set. So we really had no other decision than to drop the irons and just have it… Read more »

ERICH The TW Logo medallion covers a weight bore on the sole. What I can’t tell you is whether the clubmaker that build the clubs put any weight into this weight bore as part of his custom assembly of the clubs. Possibly not since there is also a weight bore in the bottom of the hosel that would be the first choice for adding any weight that the specs of the clubs may have dictated was necessary. IF there was a weight in there, you should see it with the medallion gone. At any rate, if there was never a… Read more »
Hi Tom, I have a Taylormade Burner driver WHICH i HATE! I feel like its too light and I am all over the place no stability and I feel like the shaft is too long I am 6′
Joseph First reason I bet for your dislike of the driver is it is way too long for you. Driver and wood length MUST be fit on the basis of the golfer’s swing characteristics and have NOTHING to do with how tall you are or how long your arms are or any physical size characteristic. Only irons are fit on the basis of golfer height, arm length, wrist to floor, etc. ALL of the big companies make their drivers between 45-46″ in length because they bet on the golfer being able to hit one out of twenty good so he’ll… Read more »
Hi,
I recently purchased a set of 730CL hybrid irons and woods but the 6/7 club was missing. What shaft would be comparable to the standard 730CL lightweight shaft? (Oh, I even have a set of 730CL irons!)
Thanks!
Jeffrey
The 730CL clubheads could be custom built with any shaft, but the shaft model from our design work that was most frequently chosen to go with the 730CL heads was the S2S Ruby Lite graphite, which was available in either AA (L) or A flexes. This is a 65g weight shaft with 5.0* of torque. So what you would be looking for would be any 65g shaft in A or AA (L) flex (depending on what flex is in the other 730s you have) that would be more tip flexible in its bend profile.
TOM
Thanks so much for the info Tom! I am a devoted Wishon user. In addition to the 730CL series I have a set of Sterlings, 752TC and 785HF clubs. Thanks again for designing such great golf clubs!
The thanks are to you for being such a great supporter of what we have always tried to do in our work, both in the design side and the research and writing side too!!

These look like they would be an excellent option for kids as well. Have these designs ever been used for these application?
TOM I have not personally heard from any clubmakers who told me directly that they used the 730CL for a junior golfer but the design characteristics certainly could work for a junior player who has not yet begun to develop an increasing clubhead speed. The only thing that might toss a wrench into that would be its color – some kids might not be all that enamoured by the dark burgundy head paint of the driver, woods and hybrids. The model was first conceived as being for women and slower swinging senior men so that was why the decision on… Read more »
tom, my 81 year old father currently plays the entire set of 730cl clubs i put together for him; driver to dw wedge. he had a swing speed of 70mph last time we measured a few years ago before putting together the set. he has asked my to put together a set of sterling one length clubs for him. his swing is not smooth with his wrists set up breaking soon into his down swing. can you see any advantage to putting together a set of one length clubs for him? would he gain anything from that many more clubheads… Read more »
MIKE If your father’s 70mph speed is with the driver, there just would not be more than a 5 yard difference in distance between each of the single length irons. Also, he would not have the speed to effectively elevate the shot with the 5 and 6 irons in the set so their distances could even be as much as 5 yards apart from each other. So his single length set would probably need to be a #7 to SW and then you would have to use the hybrids for the 6 and 5. IMO it just would not be… Read more »
thank you for the advice. i will certainly give it a try,
Hi Tom, I have had my swing speed measured at 85. I got fitted for a high-loft (13 degree I believe) 919 driver and 3 and 5 hybrids in your 335 design. I can get 175 yards with 3 hybrid on a good day and made occasional friends with the driver. I currently play GI irons of 5-24, 6-27, 7-31, 8-35, 9-39 with 44 Pitch and 49 Gap I am happy with getting 7-P irons up and away but I don’t feel like there is much difference between 7 and 8 or 8 and 9 irons but 7-9 is too… Read more »
BRIAN Sounds like you are a victim of the science of ball striking! Given your clubhead speed based on your report of distance with the 3 hybrid, it sounds like the main reason you don;t see as much distance between each iron is because your clubhead speed is not high enough to deliver what you perceive to be the proper distance between each iron. In the industry the usual loft difference as you have seen between each iron is chiefly 4*. Golfers are led to believe this 4* loft gap will give thenm 10-15 yds between each iron. That only… Read more »
Thanks for the reply Tom. I find I am more comfortable with fairway woods than hybrids for lower lofts. I have been keen to try hybrids in higher lofts as the 5 hybrid was very reliable. I willl see if I can get a test of the 730 hybrids.
could a similar set like this be set up for a mid 90’s swing speed guy? I do not get to play as often as I would like, but would be more consistent if it was set up like this
ZACK The heads in the 730CL set certainly can be shafted with whatever shaft model and flex fits your mid 90s swing speed with your swing characteristics and the grip and swingweight can be made to fit you as well. The only thing that might be of any concern would be the fact that the iron heads are hybrid heads spaced 6* in loft apart from each other. At a mid 90s swing speed that might hit the ball a little higher than you would be comfortable with because of the very low center of gravity in those heads. And… Read more »
This sounds like a set I could use, since my measured driver swing speed is at or slightly less than 80 mph. Do I under stand correctly that there are 8 club heads in the complete set?
FRED: Yes, the full set of 730CL consists of a 15* loft driver, two fairway woods of 20* and 25* loft respectively, three hybrid irons at 30*, 36* and 42* loft to represent the hybrid equivalent of the #5 iron, #6/7 iron and #8/9 iron. Then there is a PW and a SW to complete the set which are conventional shaped wedges. The reason for only 8 clubs with greater loft spacing between clubs is because players with sub 80mph swing speeds do not typically achieve an adequate distance gap between clubs if the loft spacing is a normal 3… Read more »
Hello, Tom. Just wanted to add my thoughts about this amazing design. There are lots of senior golfers in my area, and in the past I have built sets for them as well as for ladies using components from another company. Those sets turned out well, but these are extraordinary. It’s the difference between a good set and an exceptional set. My golfers are thrilled with them. Ball flight and distance up! Thank you for all the hard work you have done to develop this superior line! Best to you! Michael
MICHAEL Thank you Michael, I really appreciate you taking the time to stop by and share your comments and experience with custom building the 730s for the golfers in your area. I’m really pleased that your golfers have found with your good work on the fitting and building, that the 730s can really help them enjoy this great game a little more. It really was simple, as it just involved using the specs and concepts that over the years I know will make golf clubs just a little easier to hit with decent consistency and results. Much appreciated and may… Read more »
Hello Tom:
I have been playing the 730 set for about a year now, love them! But; I have a question: I need a little better distance off the turf, with my 20 deg fairway. Would going to a 20 deg 929 give more distance, with the same length and Ruby shaft? Does it have a lower, more rearward CG?
Charlie Thanks very much for taking the time to stop in and offer your comment with a question. I’m pleased to hear you like the 730 set! In all honesty the change to a 20* loft 929 fairway wood would not likely increase distance by more than a single number of yards. The high COR face of the 929 does offer a little more ball speed but at a clubhead speed of less than 90mph the increase might be in the area of 2, 3, 4 yards over the 730, providing both clubs would be the same length of course.… Read more »
As I advance in my seasoned citizen years, shorter length clubs are much easier for me go hit then longer clubs. I’d like to shorten the 5h and both fairway woods to the same length as the 6/7h. The clubs all have A flex ruby light shafts. How much will this effect the swing weight of the clubs?
Joseph The rule of thumb you can use is that a golf club loses 3 swingweight points for each half inch that is removed when the club is made shorter. You did not say what the length of your clubs is so you’ll have to determine that and then use this guideline to do the math to know. In general when you shorten existing clubs by an inch or more, you do not usually need to try to add weight back to the head to achieve the exact previous swingweight. But you do need to add weight back to the… Read more »
HI Tom, is the ferrule for the 730CL hybrid iron “any .335 WD STD ferrule (12.3mm)” p24 or “ferrule 121- HY-IR (13.8mm) p78. Thanks
GARTH
The 730CL hybrids use any ferrule that is made for use with any of our fairway woods such as the 121-WD-STD. That would be a ferrule with a bottom OD of 12.3mm and an ID for a 0.335″ shaft.
TOM
HI Tom, does the second weight bore just use a hosel bore weight? does the medallion snap on and off or should I buy the replacement medallions?
Thanks
GARTH There is no weight bore chamber under the TW medallion on the toe end of the sole of our driver models. This includes the 730CL as well as the 919THI. It is there for cosmetic purposes only. At one time years ago I did try to put a weight bore there on my driver models but testing proved that the presence of the weight bore cylinder extending down inside the head changed the sound of impact badly – it made impact sound too loud so I dropped the idea of ever having a sole located weight bore on any… Read more »
HI Tom, re the ferrule for a 730CL iron hybrid. The 2018 TW Catalog on p24 says to use any .335 WD STD ferrule (12.3mm) yet on p78 it mentions ferrule 121- HY-IR (13.8mm).
Please clarify which is the correct ferrule . Thanks
GARTH
Sorry for the confusion in the catalog. All of my drivers are made with a 13.0mm diameter for the top of the hosel. So every one of my drivers is to use the Ti ferrules which are 13.0mm for the diameter of the bottom of the ferrule – 121-Ti for the plain black ferrule for 0.335″ tip shafts for all my titanium driver heads.
TOM
HI Tom, if the 730CL 5Iron is fit to 38″ and using 1/2″ increments, would the 6/7 hybrid be cut to the 6iron length (ie 1/2″ shorter) or the 7iron length (ie 1″ shorter)?
Please explain how to choose.
Thanks in advance
GARTH
Whether for men’s or women’s length or any other in between or shorter length, the difference between each 730CL hybrid iron is to be 1 inch. so if the #5 is 38, then the 6/7 would be an inch shorter and the 8/9 would be 2″ shorter than the #5.
