Hey Tom, I recently found a brand new 321LI 33* 6 hybrid head, built it and tossed it in my bag as a 7i substitute, and wow, that thing is soooo fun to hit, The offset combined with it not being very hot just gives me an extremely consistent 140-145 every time. I believe that’s the highest lofted club in that line, so was looking at some 785HF clubs on ebay since they seem to be a similar design, except maybe a higher COR? I can’t seem to find the lofts on those, I presume they’re a tad stronger than… Read more »
MATT I’ll echo your sentiment that the high loft hybrids are fun to play with. The 785s were made with a high COR face. In fact they were the very first hybrid model in the golf industry made with a high COR face. Lofts there are #2 – 17*; #3 – 20*; #4 – 23.5*; #5 – 27*; #6 – 31*; #7 – 35* and up by 4* for the rest of the heads from the original 2 to PW set makeup. Back when we sold this, we did drop the #7 to PW and kept it as a 2… Read more »
Found an 8 and 9 785HF on eBay and now my bag looks like this:
919THI, 929HS 12* 2 wood (for emergencies only), 929HS 4W, 929HS 7W, 929HS 9W, 915 HL 11W, 321LI 6H, 785HS 8 & 9H, 585PC PW, 309 HCG G,S,L.
No time to practice these days, so might as well get the ball up in the air haha.
MATT That’s about the most intelligent and best set makeup for easy play and game improvement that I think I have ever heard about. Reading this from you makes me equally jealous and frustrated – Jealous because I wish I had kept at least a few of some of these models you have found like the 919-9w, the 915HL 11w, and the higher number 785s. And frustrated because I realize what an idiot I was to not keep a handful of each of my more favorite models over the years when we discontinued it. Boy do I wish there was… Read more »
Haha very kind words, thanks a lot! My apprenticeship with Bill Owen (plus reading all your books!) has taught me a lot about all the things you extoll. I was down to ~5 hcp in my hard core days, but this year since I am so busy, I’ve made a conscious effort to just have fun with golf again, hence the set makeup! Now when I sneak out for 9 holes the only difference between shooting a 36 or a 45 is do all the putts go in, or do they all just rest next to the hole for a… Read more »

You have done well to have Bill as a mentor. Good for you and for him as well to be able to share what he has learned over the years. I remember getting Bill’s emails so he should not be having any block or reason for his message not getting through. Not sure what that could be as I haven’t had any issues with my service here for years. Anyway, don’t hesitate to contact me for any help you may need.

Success!?! After giving up all hope I came across a person with matching Wishon 785HF 8, 9 & PW clubs on eBay. I bought them on the spot!?! Now just looking for a spare 785HF 7 iron. 😇
Hi Tom! I’m desperate. Does anyone, anywhere have a 785 HF 8 iron?
Thanks,
Jeff
Jeffrey
Ouch on that one. None here. I thought I had a 785-7 in my bins because a friend wanted to drop his 7i and go with a hybrid and I did think I had one left around. But in digging all around my shop, I could only find one 785-6 and several 785-4s and nothing else. Maybe try Ebay?
TOM
Thanks Tom! I have 785 HF’s from 2 to 9, excluding the 3 and 8. And I even have two 785-6 clubs! I’ve been trying to make due with an Orlimar 8 rescue hybrid but it’s not quite the same. I’ll keep an eye on eBay. Thanks again!
Hi Tom! I found a solution to the missing 785-8. Went through my inventory and came across two 752TC 8 irons. Decided to put a matching grip on the one with an Apache graphite shaft and that is working perfectly with the 785 set!
Jeffrey
Good to hear that! Jumping right into experiment with options to find what works is so often a successful route to take!
TOM
785HF – 4 anyone? Tom, you said that you had several 4’s around the shop. Any chance of getting one of those? The 785HF – 4 that I have was reamed out to .370 prior to my purchase and although I have found a great use for it, I would love to have one in the original .335!
Thanks!
Jeffrey
I spoke too soon when I may have said that about other 785-4 heads in my shop. I had one only and 2 months ago a customer from New Jersey asked for it and I sent it to him. So I am devoid of any more of those heads, I am very sorry to say.
TOM
I have a #4 785HF club head with a .370 hosel which surprised me as the #2 through #6 clubs are supposed to be .335. Were any of these club heads made .370 hosels or am I just a lucky recipient of a custom club?
Jeffrey
Someone must have reamed the hosel of that old 785HF hybrid head because I have never yet designed a hybrid in the history of the company with a 0.370 bore.
TOM
Tom,
What are the lofts of the 7-PW in the old 785 hybrids?
Jeff
JEFF
Sure thing, happy to help. 785-7 = 35*; 8 = 39*; 9 = 43.5*; PW = 48*. Wish the sales of these had been bigger so that we would not have been forced to discontinue the 7 to PW part of this model. I do think there is definite benefit from an all hybrid iron set for quite a few golfers but creating and inventorying any model is not possible without sufficient demand. Thanks,
TOM
Would using a 335 tip hybrid shaft with shims work well with the 785’s 7 to PW? These heads must not have been very strong in the market place
DICK: Yes, you can use the 0.335 tip hybrid shafts in those 0.370 bore heads with a shim. Yes, it is true when we had this full set 785HF model, the #7 to PW did not sell nearly as much as did the lower loft models. And of course, this is because the vast majority of golfers see a hybrid as a low loft iron replacement club. But we did have some who went for the full set, mostly it was slower swing speed players, and the reports back were that they liked them over their conventional irons. Actually, the… Read more »
